THE
COLOMBIAN SUGAR INDUSTRY,
one of the most efficient in the world |
|
 |
| At
the present time Colombia produces around two million six hundred
thousand tons of sugar each year, of which nearly 50% of it
is exported. The Colombian sugar industry is located in the
geographic valley of the Cauca River in the southwestern part
of the country. In this valley as an exceptional condition,
only shared by Hawaii and the northern part of Peru, climatic
differences are present between day and night, which are necessary
for sucrose concentration in the sugar cane. This privileged
condition permits to harvest, mill cane and produce sugar all
year round unlike what happens in all the rest of the sugar
cane zones of the world, in which sugar cane harvesting only
lasts between four to six months of the year. As a consequence,
the fixed charges of investment in the mill, field equipment
and capital assets per ton of sugar cane produced are half and
even a third of those existing in the average of the sugar cane
zones of the world. Due to this and to the notable fertility
of the soil, Colombian sugar industry is one of the four most
efficient in the world, including the beet sugar production. |
